This is a story about the supernatural in Ireland. Into the story of the McCarthy family, the author manages to weave many interesting myths and legends as well as showing all sorts of old customs, some religious in origin, some pagan. The McCarthy family is special as grandfather Joe, married a fairy. He had to make a terrible bargain and it is this bargain that haunts the characters throughout the story.

5 starsOne family’s terrible bargainBy Sdan12 on August 16, 2016Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase

I always enjoy myths and legends, so I was eager to read this story. It draws upon Irish folk tales and is a mine of information about old traditions and customs. The story hinges on a deal with the devil made by Grandfather Joe McCarthy and how this haunts his children and grandchildren. You really feel for the characters as supernatural events overcome them. You can also learn a lot about how hard life was in rural Ireland centuries ago. This is the first book in a series and the ending is a cliff-hanger
